The Zurich–Winterthur railway line is of great importance for regional rail traffic and rail traffic throughout Switzerland. The Swiss Federal Railways ʺSchweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB)ʺ is currently planning to extend this line, with the Brütten Tunnel – the centerpiece of the large-scale MehrSpur Zurich–Winterthur project. The approximately 9-km-long railway tunnel will consist of two single-track rail tunnels with 20 cross connections. The rail tunnels will split off from each other at an underground junction and surface in three different locations.
After more than two years of intensive planning and design, demanding coordination work and valuable exchange with experts and stakeholders, ILF, as the lead company, working together with the SBB, has been able to complete the permit application design for Section 2 Brütten Tunnel of the MehrSpur Zurich–Winterthur project. The SBB has submitted the permit application design to the Swiss Federal Office of Transport, which was followed by a public display of the project documents in the affected municipalities in June 2023. At the same time, the above-ground construction measures were marked out on site.
